Rundown

Besides introducing the world to the term “Fagabeefe,” the movie Midnight Madness (inspired by the actual “The Game,” no less!) also introduced a new form of ARG-type adventure to a population that has been more than willing embrace it. Every year the game is different, and every year you never know what it’s going to ask you to do- drive an RC boat into icy waters to retrieve a clue, get dropped off in the middle of a state park at night, or dance with the devil in the pale moonlight- and you have to be prepared for anything.
First started many years ago by a group of dedicated puzzle enthusiasts in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Midnight Madness has enjoyed several years of repeated enjoyment by all participants. Midnight Madness is held in both rain and shine- which is always a gamble during the late December time frame alloted to the game.
Midnight Madness begins in the evening with all teams assembled at a starting line. Game Control goes over rules, contact information, and other pertinent information to the night’s adventures before revealing the first clue. Teams must solve each clue in order to get the location for the following clue. Clues are solved in this manner until all teams reach the Finish Line. Many games may feature “side missions” or themes which require the solving of clues that may not immediately lead to a location, but are used later on in the game. Other games also feature “pre-games,” which are internet-based mini-games that take place throughout the year leading up to the main event, and may also provide teams with either time bonuses or clues as to extra materials that may be needed during the actual game. All games are run with “hints” being provided by Game Control in the event that teams get stumped by any particular clues.
Teams are rarely restricted by size, which means that a “team” can consist of any number of people. Generally, a team that can fit into a single vehicle is best. Games are often designed so that teams do not necessarily need fancy equipment to solve clues- but standard team materials usually include at least one laptop with Wi-Fi capabilities.
The team in charge of each game is Game Control. Game Control rotates each year, with the winning team of one game taking over the title of Game Control and creating the entire game for the next year.
This page is intended to summarize what Midnight Madness Arkansas is all about- but unless you’ve already run through a field at 4 AM in the rain while wearing a HazMat suit, or dipped your hand into a paper-mache “dead body” full of red corn starch, this might not be the best way to learn about the game. Take a look at our photos, read our write-ups. Read about other games played elsewhere in the nation.
And, if you’re still interested, shoot us an e-mail. We’ll tell you how to get started, or try to connect you with others in need of teammates. We want you to play and we promise you’ll love it… but, whatever you do, don’t call it a scavenger hunt!
